Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of the Superintendent’s Leadership Team and is responsible for the strategic and operational management of all district financial functions. This includes budget development, financial planning, accounting, payroll, purchasing, grants, risk management, and ensuring compliance with state and federal requirements. The CFO provides clear, timely financial information to the Superintendent, Board of Education, staff, and community.

This position is ideal for a finance professional who enjoys collaborative leadership in a rural district and can balance strategic planning with hands-on financial management.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead development, implementation, and monitoring of the district’s annual budget across all funds.

• Provide financial analysis, projections, and recommendations to the Superintendent and Board of Education.

• Oversee accounting, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, cash management, and internal controls.

• Ensure compliance with Colorado school finance law, state budgeting requirements, federal grant regulations, and district policies.

• Coordinate the annual independent audit and all required CDE financial reports/submissions.

• Manage state/federal grant accounting and support financial components of capital projects and grants.

• Administer district insurance, risk management, and purchasing processes.

• Present financial updates and budget reports at Board meetings and committee sessions.

• Maintain strong community and interagency relationships, including collaboration with BOCES and regional partners.

Minimum Qualifications

• BA in Accounting/Business Management is recommended, along with successful experience in accounting.

• Knowledge of GAAP standards and public budgeting practices.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial audiences.

• Proficiency with financial software systems, spreadsheets, and data analysis tools.

Preferred Qualifications

•  Preferred five (5) years of progressive experience in governmental or public-sector finance, including experience in Colorado K–12 school finance and CDE financial reporting.

• CPA certification and/or Master’s degree in finance, accounting, or related discipline.

• Experience managing state and federal grants.

• Prior leadership experience in a rural or small-district setting.

Salary & Benefits

• Proposed range: $65,937 – 90,389 annually, depending on qualifications and experience.

Food Service Director

The Upper Rio Grande School District is seeking an innovative, student-centered Food Service Director to lead our district’s nutrition program.  We are looking for a dynamic food service professional who enjoys working with kids, values teamwork, and is passionate about providing healthy, nutritious, and kid-friendly meals that fuel learning and wellness.

The Food Service Director oversees all aspects of school nutrition operations across the district, including menu planning, budgeting, staff supervision, food safety compliance, and state/federal reporting.  The ideal candidate will bring creativity, leadership, and a deep commitment to high-quality service for our students and staff.

Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following educational and experience standards:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent educational experience) in food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field; OR

  • Associate’s degree (or equivalent) in one of the above fields plus at least one year of relevant food service experience; OR

  • High school diploma or GED plus three years of relevant food service experience.

    Note: For districts with fewer than 500 students, less than three years of experience may be accepted when education requirements are met.

Additionally:

  • Must hold a current ServSafe Certification

Salary and Benefits

  • Starting salary: $41,118 (negotiable based on experience)
  • Health Insurance: District pays $666/month toward health insurance premium
  • Section 125 Plan: Pre-tax options for premiums, out-of-pocket medical expenses, and dependent care
  • Retirement:
    • PERA (Public Employees Retirement Association) participation
    • Employee contributes 11%, district contributes 21.4%
